Disability and Abuse in Later Life Institute
The Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence will host a one-day Institute on Disability and Abuse in Later Life in Orlando, Florida for domestic violence advocates and allied partners. The purpose of the training is to increase knowledge and awareness regarding the barriers and obstacles to safety for survivors living with abuse in later life.
Guest Speakers:
Candace Heisler, J.D., served as an assistant adjunct professor of law for more than 20 years at University of California’s Hastings College of the Law, San Francisco. She helped develop curricula on elder abuse for judges, prosecutors, law enforcement, Adult Protective Services workers, and victim advocates for the U.S. Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women, the American Bar Association, and the California Administrative Office of the Courts.
Michelle Schwartz holds a Master’s Degree in Psychology and is Director of the Disability Services of SAFE in Austin, Texas. Michelle speaks nationally on issues related to victimization of people with disabilities and recently co-edited Promoting Justice, an Essential Resource Guide for Responding to Abuse Against Children with Disabilities. Michelle has over 20 years of personal and professional experiences working with and advocating for treatment and rights of people with disabilities.
LaTrice Hogan, MSW, CSAC, ICS, founded INSPIRE Consulting in 2008 to counsel, educate and train professionals in the field of trauma and substance abuse. She is nationally recognized as an expert in family violence and substance abuse. LaTrice was the Director of the Milwaukee Women’s Center for over 14 years providing services in areas related to elder, later life, domestic and substance abuse.
