The Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence will host a one-day Institute on Abuse in Later Life in Orlando, Florida for domestic violence advocates and allied partners. The purpose of the training is to increase knowledge and awareness regarding the barriers and obstacles to safety for survivors living with abuse in later life.

Institute is free to attend. Travel scholarships are available.

Guest Speakers:

Art Mason is the Director of the Elder Abuse Prevention Program at Lifespan of Greater Rochester. Since 1998, Mr. Mason and his staff have trained over 9000 professionals and provided public awareness/educational presentations to more than 17000 individuals nationally. He was also instrumental in organizing and coordinating the NYS Elder Abuse Summits in 2004 and 2010. He is a Past President of the National Adult Protective Services Association. Mr. Mason is a member of the NYS Elder Abuse Coalition and does trainings across the country to law enforcement, social service professionals, and a variety of organizations.

Rev. Dr. Sarah M. Rieth is an Episcopal priest serving as Chaplain at Penick Village, a faith-based continuing care retirement community in Southern Pines, North Carolina. Her dissertation and published articles focus on the healing needs of survivors of abuse. She has worked with her own and other judicatories to develop policies, procedures, prevention training, healing protocols, and pastoral response teams to address misconduct in the church, and she has provided healing consultations for churches of many denominations.

Michael LaRiviere has been a member of the Salem Police Department since 1989. His duties during his six years as Domestic Violence Liaison Officer (DVLO) included domestic violence investigations, policy/procedure development, and training. His work has significantly changed the way domestic violence cases are investigated in Salem and surrounding communities. Mr. LaRiviere is currently assigned to Criminal Investigations under the Support Services Division as the departments Victim Services Officer.
