The Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence (FCADV) introduces the Advanced Advocacy Regional Training Institute. This two-day training will provide certified domestic violence advocates with information on advanced advocacy training topics designed to enhance knowledge and skills for advocates working with survivors of domestic violence and their children in the certified domestic violence centers. Advocates can register for one or more of the workshops and will be able to choose the workshops they would like to attend when registering.  Please choose up to six workshops you will be attending when registering for this training.

Training Agenda

Day one:   

  • Advanced Empowerment-based Advocacy & Ethics – will focus on the enhanced development of survivor-centered advocacy, trauma-informed and empowerment skills and ethical communication practices that advocates can use to support and advocate for survivors of domestic violence. (4 hours) (8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)
  • Screening and Intake/Exit Practices – will provide information on developing multiple strategies for screening for domestic violence. It will also provide information on empowerment-based intake and exit practices that include assessment for services, gathering information, offering surveys and providing information regarding ongoing services to survivors of domestic violence at a certified domestic violence center. (2 hours) (1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.)
  • Conflict Resolution & De-escalation – will review definition of conflict, sources of conflict in shelter, contributing factors for escalated conflict and identify strategies for intervention and crisis de-escalation communication techniques when working with survivors of domestic violence. (2 hours) (3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.)

Day two:

  • Advanced Safety Planning & Risk Assessments – will define and identify risk and its association with intimate partner violence and identify high risk indicators for intimate partner homicide. The training will also review information regarding enhanced advocacy utilizing different strategies when safety planning with survivors of domestic violence. (2 hours) (8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.)
  • Anti-Oppression & Working with Survivors from Marginalized Communities – will focus on understanding oppression and privilege, the intersectional impacts of domestic violence and the role of an advocate when supporting survivors of domestic violence who identify as a part of marginalized group(s). (2 hours) (10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)
  • Advanced Survivors Living with Substance Abuse & Mental Health Complexities Training – will explore the intersection of intimate partner violence and substance use/mental health complexities/abuse. The training will also discuss coercive tactics batterers use to gain and maintain power and control over survivors of domestic violence living with substance use/mental health complexities, traumatic effects of coercive control and suicidality. The training will offer practical trauma-informed care strategies on how to support survivors of domestic violence living with substance use/mental health complexities. (2 hours) (1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.)
  • The trainings will include videos, practical examples, break-out sessions with experiential activities, and participant discussion.

The two day training will occur from 8:30am-5:30pm on day one and from 8:30am-3:30pm on day two, lunch will be on your own each day from 12:30pm-1:30pm.
Travel scholarships may be provided to certified domestic violence centers required to travel 50 miles or more for this event. A limited number of travel scholarships will be offered on a first come, first serve basis. Please request a scholarship while registering online.
