2020 Healthy Advocate Initiative
It’s that time of year again! FCADV is excited to announce the 2020 Healthy Advocate Initiative! Healthy advocates make a difference! They are more balanced, responsive, compassionate, dedicated, and enthusiastic about this lifesaving work.
Advocates play an important role in assisting survivors to access safety and address the violence caused by an abusive partner. Although the rewarding nature of this work is what drives many advocates to this work, it can also be the cause of vicarious trauma. Advocates talk about self-care, but what does that really look like? It can be a challenge to find time, balance and manage self-care.
During the 2018 Healthy Advocate Initiative, advocates throughout Florida examined how to enhance self-care as it relates to the secondary trauma that is often experienced by advocates and frontline crisis workers. Center staff participated in running/walking groups, shared healthy snacks at meetings, and supported each other in weight-loss challenges.
In this effort towards supporting healthy advocates, FCADV is hosting the twelve week 2020 Healthy Advocate Challenge from January 13th through April 5th. We encourage you to do something positive for your health and wellbeing. Whether it is beginning an exercise program, choosing healthy meals and snacks, quitting smoking, making time for fun, cutting out caffeine, increasing financial health, or taking a few minutes a day for yourself.
Your goals should be individualized to meet your own self-identified needs. Self-care isn’t only lifestyle changes, it’s important to identify what works best for you! Healthy activity tracking logs can be used to record daily wellness activities and will be sent out after registration. The tracking logs are an optional tool for your use.
Show off your accomplishments! FCADV will provide a poster board to all participating centers to show the cumulative efforts of the center during the challenge. The posters can portray your definition of a “healthy advocate”, activities participated in during the twelve-week period, and/or tools learned to support your own self-care. The poster/tri fold poster board will be displayed at FCADV’s Rural Institute in spring 2020
During the institute attendees will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite poster.
Please bring the completed tri-fold poster board to the Rural Institute, if your center wishes to participate in the challenge. If a center is not able to attend the Rural Institute, please contact Dorothy Lane, Accessibility Project Specialist, to discuss an alternative plan for the poster to arrive to the institute. Please contact Dorothy Lane at firstname.lastname@example.org for your purchase request.
2020 Healthy Advocate Challenge Winner
The certified domestic violence center with the highest poster votes will receive five travel scholarships to the 2021 Biennial Institute. The center will also receive a special congratulations from FCADV staff.
